The first step to dismantling systemic racism is to do the work of learning and relearning the historical, theoretical, and conceptual frameworks used to illustrate, identify, and describe race and racism.
In order to engage in effective discourse and find our own voices in activist movements, we must build awareness of our own beliefs and ideas and understand how those beliefs and ideas contribute to or uphold systems of oppression. When we do the parallel work of interrogating our personal worldview while at the same time actively participating in collective action, we can begin to dismantle racism at the institutional and systemic levels.
